The secret to a kitchen that’s a pleasure to cook in is an efficient, essentials-at-your-fingertips layout. In creating the kitchen for the 2022 House Beautiful Whole Home, designer Whittney Parkinson approached the placement of both major appliances and smaller kitchen tools supplied by Wayfair with an eye toward making them easily accessible—but also tucked away to reduce visual clutter.
Her first trick was concealing appliances that see constant daily use behind custom cabinetry, starting with the refrigerator and freezer. While stainless steel is a classic finish for large appliances, Parkinson points out that all that metal draws the eye away from a kitchen’s prettier decorative elements. Incorporating the fridge and freezer into the cabinetry achieves a seamless effect without compromising accessibility.
She used the technique again to disguise a handy coffee bar within steps of the kitchen’s main work spaces. You’d never guess that the French door–style cabinets open to reveal a counter housing a coffee and espresso maker from Wayfair (with space left over to stash a coffee grinder, French press, or electric kettle) and built-in adjustable shelves to hold mugs and other supplies.
The small appliances throughout the kitchen are all from Wayfair, which offers anything and everything you could want for your home, including a wide selection of quality cooking essentials at can’t-beat prices. The adjacent pantry, with its combination of drawers and open shelves, provides tidy, dedicated storage for a KitchenAid stand mixer, Breville toaster, Ninja 9-cup food processor, and other frequently used tools. This keeps them close, so the cook can reach them in an instant, but prevents them from taking up valuable counter space.
